5 Essential Tips to Prevent Holiday Fires and Keep Your Season Merry and Bright

10/9/2023 (Permalink)

Food on fire in a pan. Make sure to keep an eye on the stove!

The holiday season is a time for joy, celebration, and spending quality time with loved ones. However, it's also a time when the risk of fires in our homes tends to increase. From the twinkling lights on our Christmas trees to the flickering candles on the menorah, there are many potential fire hazards lurking in our homes during this festive time. But fear not! With some careful planning and safety precautions, you can ensure a fire-safe holiday season for you and your family.

  1. Choose Flameless Candles: While candles can create a warm and cozy atmosphere, they also pose a significant fire risk. Opt for flameless LED candles instead. They mimic the appearance of real candles without the danger of an open flame.

  2. Water Your Tree: If you have a live Christmas tree, make sure to keep it well-hydrated by regularly watering it. A dry tree is more susceptible to catching fire from nearby heat sources.

  3. Keep an Eye on the Stove: Cooking is a big part of holiday celebrations, but it's also a common source of fires. Never leave the stove unattended, use a timer to remind you of cooking times, and keep flammable materials away from the stovetop.

  4. Turn Off Lights and Decorations: Before going to bed or leaving your home, be sure to turn off all holiday lights and decorations. This simple step can prevent electrical fires and save energy.

  5. Have an Emergency Plan: Prepare your family with a fire escape plan. Discuss the plan with everyone in your household and practice fire drills so that everyone knows what to do in case of a fire emergency.

These are just a few, but by following these 5 essential tips, you can significantly reduce the risk of fires in your home and keep your holidays safe and happy!

Fire & Soot Cleanup - We'll Tackle It All

4/11/2023 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Southern York County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Charred wood?

4/7/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Southern York County has got hundreds of calls over the years regarding fire damages. There are many ways to approach fire damage to a home or business. In almost all cases SERVPRO is there to remove the damaged materials and clean the remaining areas. But cleaning these areas is never a walk in the park. In many cases, we need to use a technique known as soda blasting to get the wood back as close to preloss condition as possible.

Soda blasting is a combination of compressed air mixed with essentially baking soda to "blast" the wood in small sections to slowly work away the charred wood areas and leave the unaffected wood intact. This process can take hours or days depending on the size of the loss.

After the soda blasting is completed SERVPRO is then able to do a final cleaning of the home and provide odor sealing to ensure the odor is eliminated.

For more information on soda blasting or fire damage please feel free to call our office anytime.
